Photographer Ali Kabaş returns to Pg Art Gallery after a two-year break. The exhibition consists of works developed around the idea of creating different perspectives on a single subject.
The dictionary meanings of the words that give the exhibition its title are as follows: “recto” refers to the front side of a document or the right-hand page of a book; “verso” refers to the back side of a document, the left-hand page of a book, or the reverse of a painting.
With Recto/Verso, Kabaş aims to remind us that the world we see and perceive can be viewed from different angles. He seeks to reveal how even a slight shift from where we stand can transform our field of perception.
The works presented offer numerous clues that the artist is entering a new phase in his practice.
Created using the lenticular printing technique, the pieces aim to introduce movement to the object. Motivated by the desire to transform the static into motion, the artist departs from the idea of preserving movement while transitioning from one image to another within the same photograph. In this way, a sense of vitality is established between objects. The exhibition also features variations in shooting style and technical approach, drawing attention to diverse applications. In order to individualize each piece, Kabaş incorporates a distinct characteristic into every photograph.
Although computer-assisted special effects are employed, care has been taken not to stray too far from the discipline of photography. Prepared with a distinctive technique and conceptual framework, Recto/Verso was on view at Pg Art Gallery from December 6, 2006 to January 14, 2007.
