Betül İncedayı Gülerman

9 November - 9 December 2004

Pg Art Gallery hosts Betül İncedayı Gülerman’s solo exhibition opening on November 9. Marking the artist’s return after a long hiatus, the exhibition can be viewed at Pg Art Gallery in Bebek until December 9, every day except Mondays, between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm.

“I am Betül İncedayı Gülerman: My nine-year academic journey, covering both high school and higher education, concluded in 1968 when I graduated from the Advanced Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (İDGSA), from the studio of Neşet Günal. (Five years in Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu’s studio and four years in Neşet Günal’s studio.) During my academic years and afterwards, I consistently worked with the figure. For economic independence, I chose graphic design, which in turn allowed me to continue painting, as I did not like compromising on it. My paintings emerge from the frozen moments of what I observe—moments that come alive in my imagination, slightly satirized, and conveyed through a narrative expression and painterly language. The drawings are first created and then transferred onto canvas.

I enjoy slightly deforming all the objects I use in my compositions (human, animal, object, nature) and playing with their perspectives. In my earlier works, the figures were more plain and perspective was almost nonexistent. In my recent works, however, I create more detailed paintings in which, alongside interior spaces, nature is also present, and where I fully embrace the world of light and color. I do not like to hold exhibitions frequently, but I take pleasure in sharing my work with viewers when I feel ready.”
