Following his 2006 exhibition “4th Layer,” Devabil Kara returns to Pg Art Gallery with his latest works in an exhibition titled “What Language Cannot Say.”
For the first time in this exhibition, alongside his paintings, the artist will also present a sculpture. Titled “White Whale,” the sculpture appears as a three-dimensional realization of works the artist had previously conceived in two dimensions.
Over time, language — which has itself become an art object and even exists as an artistic proposition — not only enables us to reach the dimensions of thought but also helps us decipher the chaotic structure of the world of objects. Perhaps the most essential function of language is to allow us to communicate and to express ourselves. In “What Language Cannot Say,” Devabil Kara questions our world of perception through the concept of language. The artist focuses on the many accumulated things that, in the face of ever-changing circumstances that both surround and transform us, we sometimes choose not to say, and at other times cannot say because we do not know how — in short, all that language fails to express, for whatever reason.
A faculty member in the Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University, the artist is represented in Washington by Parish Gallery. Having participated in numerous biennials, triennials, and international art organizations, Kara has received awards in printmaking and painting. His works are included in private and institutional collections both in Turkey and abroad.
