Mahir Güven

2 - 28 November 2006

After a two-year break, Mahir Güven returns to PG Art Gallery this year. The model studies he produced throughout the summer of 2006 will be on view from November 2 to November 28.

In his work, Mahir Güven explores the metaphor that the model he associates with his production is, in fact, himself. By internalizing his experiences, the artist reveals his own condition and inner life in his works. Acting upon the idea that “the one who creates the model and the model itself are both the artist,” he seeks to examine the connection between the artist and what he produces. Advocating the view that a work of art can be described as the expression of the artist, Güven creates a living atmosphere in his recent works. Rather than depicting imagined scenarios, he paints lived life, and within the illusion he constructs, he also reveals his own place.

The earth tones that dominated his earlier paintings give way to blues, pinks, and luminous yellows. The works he presents offer many clues that the artist is entering a new phase.

Unlike his previous paintings, Mahir Güven now illuminates his subjects using daylight. His recent works can be viewed at PG Art Gallery between November 2 and November 28, 2006.
