A New Exhibition by Merih Akoğul: BİT-Kİ

Merih Akoğul’s second photography exhibition at Pg Art Gallery once again brings us face to face with the world of plants.

The first section of the exhibition consists of photographs taken in two different approaches. Here, plants are captured in black and white through a documentary lens, situated within the flow of everyday life. Sometimes they appear as reeds where children play in and around a lake; sometimes as plants placed in large pots to prevent cars from parking; at times as a small tree leaning against a wall on a vast city avenue; and at others as mysterious plants guarding the sculptures of a hidden garden…

In the second section, the results of an energy field and meditative atmosphere created by spending an extended period in the same environment with plants (predominantly flowers) are recorded on color material. Through forms, spatial fields, and the effects of light on surfaces, close-up images of an intimate world are presented to the viewer.

Ultimately, through these two distinct approaches, Merih Akoğul once again addresses “BİT-Kİ”—the oldest and noblest species of the earth—through the medium of photography, introducing new ways of seeing. The memories and impressions of a photographer striving to reveal what lies between “what exists” and “what appears” bring together documentary and experimental realms at Pg Art Gallery.
