RE-PRESENTATION: FORM, MATHEMATICS AND VISUAL PERCEPTION

13 November - 20 December 2024

PG Art Gallery is delighted to host Hasan Pehlevan’s solo exhibition titled "Re-Presentation: Form, Mathematics, and Visual Perception" from November 13 to November 20, 2024.

Pehlevan’s “Re-Presentation” exhibition explores the relationship between mathematical formulas and physical forms, delving into how abstract thought transforms into the tangible world. This exhibition invites viewers to rethink the building blocks of artistic form and to confront the arithmetic of visual language.

In Pehlevan’s works, the perfect order of mathematics meets the organic chaos of art. The pieces question the interaction between geometry and form, while also creating a playful challenge for the viewer’s perception. The concept of “re-presentation” in this exhibition revolves around the reinterpretation of forms and structures, allowing each viewer’s personal experience to shape distinct meanings. Standing at the intersection of mathematical precision and artistic ambiguity, Pehlevan confronts viewers with a visual puzzle in every piece. Through “re-presentation,” the artist proposes not only the reconstruction of forms but also the reconfiguration of the viewer’s perceptual and cognitive processes.

“Re-Presentation” invites viewers on a conceptual journey, examining the relationship between mathematical forms and artistic creation. This exhibition delves into how contemporary art integrates mathematical structures, shapes, ratios, and geometric sequences into works of art.

Mathematical form exists as a fundamental organizing principle of the universe, transcending human perception. Art becomes a tool to materialize this abstract language, creating a space where objects, surfaces, and volumes transform into a conceptual game. In this exhibition, Pehlevan reconstructs these formulas, geometries, and proportions in his works, offering a balance between the familiar and the unfamiliar for the viewer.

Simple elements such as triangles or classical mathematical principles like the golden ratio are reimagined in different dimensions within this exhibition. The artists push the boundaries of these structures, presenting them in new forms and layers of meaning. For example, works combining digital art practices with physical form reveal the power of algorithms in creating aesthetic structures. Meanwhile, handmade works remind viewers of the organic presence of form as it intertwines the mathematical order with nature’s chaotic structure.

This exhibition also emphasizes that form is not solely a mathematical concept but a reflection of human experience, perception, and emotions. A form can embody both an abstract mathematical reality and a personal narrative. “Re-Presentation” draws viewers into the multilayered nature of forms, encouraging them to think beyond the ordinary limits of perception.

Recurrent patterns, sequences, and symmetries frequently encountered in the works are not merely aesthetic choices but also reflections of a quest for a system and order. The tension between the certainty of mathematics and the freedom of art constitutes the main theme of the exhibition, demonstrating the profound dialogue between art and science.

“Re-Presentation” creates a space for contemplating the mathematical boundaries of form and how these boundaries can be reinterpreted through contemporary art. Offering viewers the opportunity to explore the delicate balance between art and mathematics, the exhibition also reveals how form evolves at the core of art.

Within this conceptual framework, the works offer not “solutions” but infinite “questions,” providing an experience where mathematics and aesthetics dance together. Pehlevan’s art invites viewers to rethink form, view it through a mathematical lens, and continuously reconstruct its meaning.
