Other Possibilities

April 27 - May 20, 2019

Nergiz Yeşil’s project titled “Other Possibilities” is on view at Pg Basement between 27 April and 23 May, 2019. It consists of an installation inspired by the process of kombucha culture and a book prepared by the artist herself.

The installation belongs to the artist’s new series “The Same Root Different Species ‘Other Possible Normals’” offers a critique of both the relativism of historiography premise of a cumulative structure, and of epistemology as well, through the development of an alternative mental reality.

This critical approach is crystallized in the exhibition not only in the new species created with organic materials from a speculative-fictional perspective, but also in the book offering knowledge on the so-called species. The presentation format of the book's content renders the knowledge on the species accessible physically while it also gives rise to mentally unattainable situations. As a result, the audience is simultaneously both limited and set free by their imagination, on the features of this allegedly new species.

For the installation, in order to simulates the birth of the speculative-fictional species, Yeşil fermented in her studio a biological material with strong resemblance to “victimless leather”, an element taken over from the process of a kombucha culture.
